Overview
ABOUT
Crashes on Central Oklahoma Streets are Increasing, and so are the Human and Economic Costs to our Community.
Crashes in central Oklahoma increased 21 percent from 2020 to 2021 with 21,146 total crashes. Most traffic fatalities occur on streets where speeds are 45 miles per hour or above, or streets with limited street lighting.
The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) is developing a Regional Safety Action Plan to address existing and future traffic safety deficiencies through education and proven measures in order to create safer, more equitable mobility system for all. The plan will include a holistic strategy to reduce or eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries in Central Oklahoma.
Mission Statement
In February 2024, the RSAP Planning team, which consists of ACOG staff, local municipal staff, civic leaders, law enforcement, interest groups and other stakeholders, collaborated to develop a mission statement for the Regional Safety Planning effort:
"All people deserve to live without the devastating effects of severe injuries and fatal crashes in our region. The ACOG Regional Safety Action Plan aims to promote a culture of safety by implementing policies, educating and engaging with the public, and improving infrastructure to create a safer road network for everyone."
PROJECT OVERVIEW
ACOG received federal grant funding to develop a plan as a part of the US Department of Transportation’s bipartisan Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. The Regional Safety Action Plan will analyze safety needs, identify high-risk locations and factors contributing to crashes, prioritize strategies to address them, and serve as a guide for future implementation of the improvements and funding requests.
