The City of Grandview is introducing an initiative called Vision Zero to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets.
Vision Zero is a proven, successful method of making our streets safer with the goal of eliminating all fatal and serious injury traffic crashes. Endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), more than 1,000 communities across all 50 states have developed or are in the process of developing Vision Zero programs. Vision Zero incorporates proactive, preventative improvements to roadway design and focuses on enhancing safety for all road users.
The Grandview Vision Zero Action Plan
Funded by a USDOT grant, the Grandview Vision Zero Action Plan is our city's foundational document to improve roadway safety on our streets and accomplish the goal of Vision Zero. Using recent crash data from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), as well as input from the general public and key community stakeholders, it will identify the streets and intersections in our city most in need of safety improvements. This effort will also identify the most important focus areas for roadway safety area in Grandview – for example, impaired driving, speeding, or pedestrian safety. From there, we'll develop strategies to help us achieve our vision for safety in Grandview, along with definable actions and performance measures to track our progress.
A guiding principle of the Vision Zero Action Plan is gathering and analyzing community feedback and incorporating public input into the plan. We want to hear your ideas for how to make Grandview streets safer for all road users. Give your direct feedback by answering our Quick Polls and drop pins on the engagement map below to weigh in on dangerous locations or issues you’re seeing.
This plan aligns with Missouri's commitment to becoming a Vision Zero state. Vision Zero is a global movement aimed at eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries while improving access to safe, reliable, and sustainable mobility for everyone. Missouri joined the Vision Zero initiative to prioritize safety on its roads, with support from the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and other state agencies. Several communities across Missouri have made their own commitments to the goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries, working together to create safer streets for all residents.
Our approach will be guided by Vision Zero's Safe System Approach, which is based on the principle that no loss of life is acceptable for our transportation system. Instead, the approach embraces the responsibility to plan and design our transportation system with human mistakes and vulnerabilities in mind. Key to the Safe Systems Approach are the following mindsets:
- Deaths and serious injuries are unacceptable.
- Humans make mistakes.
- Humans are vulnerable.
- Responsibility is shared.
- Safety is proactive.
- Redundancy is crucial.
the Grandview Vision Zero Action Plan needs YOU! Over the coming months, you'll have opportunities to actively participate in shaping the vision and direction of the Safety Action Plan. This will include both in-person meetings and digital engagement activities on this website.
