ABOUT

Crashes in the Permian Basin are Increasing, and so are the Human and Economic Costs to our Community

Crashes in the Region increased by 29% percent from 2020 to 2023 with 44,612 total crashes. Most traffic fatalities occur on 2-lane, undivided roadways with high speed limits and limited lighting.

The Permian Basin Regional Planning Commission is developing a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to address existing and future traffic safety deficiencies through education and proven countermeasures in order to create a safer, more equitable mobility system for all. The plan will include a holistic strategy to reduce or eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries in the Region.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

PBRPC received federal grant funding to develop a plan as a part of the US Department of Transportation’s bipartisan Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. The Comprehensive Safety Action Plan will analyze safety needs, identify high-risk locations and factors contributing to crashes, prioritize strategies to address them, and serve as a guide for future implementation of the improvements and funding requests.
